Drumchapel claim 3pts in tight league encounter

Wishaw High School F.P’s failed to take anything from their encounter against 2nd placed Premier League hopefuls Drumchapel United at the King George the V Park in Wishaw last Saturday. Despite giving as good as they got for long periods of the match the 3 points were ultimately decided by the only goal of the game 10 minutes into the 2nd period after Drumchapel’s Div Mackay saw his well drilled effort from the edge of the F.P’s penalty box beat Paul O’Hara in the F.P’s goal before finding the back of the net after cannoning in off the far post.

The F.P’s had started the match reasonably well with Gary Miller smashing a well hit 25 yard effort which looked destined for the top corner of the net until Drumchapel keeper Jamie McGall dived full length to turn the ball round the post for a corner in the 5th minute. Drumchapel dominated possession for the next 20 minutes or so with Div Mackay forcing a fine save from O’Hara which the F.P’s keeper saved well with his feet. Drumchapel’s Jamie Caldwell should have done better with a header from an Alex Clearie corner on 25 minutes but never connected cleanly enough and his header flashed wide of O’Hara’s near post. Drumchapel’s Div Mackay passed up several excellent chances to put his side in front before the interval but good saves and uncharacteristic misses from Drumchapel’s main man kept the score line level at 0-0 at the break.

It didn’t take Drumchapel long to get their noses in front in the 2nd period when Mackay again found himself in space at the edge of the box and this time as previously mentioned he made no mistake with his effort, finding the back of the net via the inside of the goalpost. The F.P’s wide midfield player Scott Donald had a superb shot flash inches wide of Drumchapel’s left hand post on 65 minutes as the home side looked to pressure the Drumchapel goal in a concerted effort to get themselves back into the game. Drumchapel responded well however and James Mulvey’s header crashed back off the F.P’s crossbar on 75 minutes much to the relief of the F.P’s back line. As play swung from end to end in the last 10 minutes, F.P’s sub Alan Patrick returning after a 4 month lay of through injury must have thought he had rescued a point for his side when he swivelled some 6 yards out only to see his net bound effort smash Drumchapel keeper McGall in the face before being forced out of play for a corner.

Despite the result F.P’s manager Gus Boyle was happy enough with the effort and commitment of the players who battled right to the end to try and salvage a point. “Both teams must take great credit for the effort and commitment shown today. The surface at the King George the V Park is not the greatest just now but both sides done their best to get it down and play when they could. Both sides had chances and I felt we deserved a point today against a side who everyone knows are top class on their day. I felt we coped reasonably well today with Div McCluskey coming in at sweeper for the influential Gerry Jamieson who was on holiday. Despite not conceding many goals, we’re not really putting the chances away at the other end either at the moment which we need to work harder at but I’m hoping we’ll improve our striking options in the coming weeks.
