F.P’s slip up against Pollok.
Wishaw High School F.P’s travelled to the South side of Glasgow on Wednesday night to face Pollok AFC and after a disappointing display came home with nothing to show for their efforts. The F.P’s started the game brightly enough and looked the likelier side to open the scoring in the opening 15 minutes with Kenny McQuade in particular looking in the mood with 2 decent efforts narrowly missing the target. The same player again just failed to connect with a great cross from Alan Patrick on 17 minutes as the F.P’s continued to pour on the pressure against the home side. On 22 minutes however, came the turning point in the match when with almost there 1st chance on goal, Pollok opened the scoring when Kevin Burnside was beaten on the by line by Pollok’s Robert Paterson who slid a ball across the 6 yard line for Brian Turner to side foot home from 6 yards. For whatever reason, whether it has been the gruelling fixtures schedule that The F.P’s have faced in the opening 2 to 3 weeks of the season or the fact that Pollok rarely give much away after taking a lead, It was a jaded looking F.P’s side for the remainder of the match, with the only notable opportunity in the opening 45 minutes for The F.P’s was a good run into the Pollok box superbly stopped with a last ditch tackle from Pollok’s Alan Jones who was outstanding on the night along with centre half Gary Sheridan.
The 2nd half could only be described as lacklustre on the F.P’s part as pass after pass was either over hit or under hit and Pollok capitalised on 2 opportunities from decidedly suspicious offside positions to take a 3-0 lead. Decisions which quite rightly so were vociferously questioned by the F.P’s players and management.
F.P’s manager Gary Hailstones was understandably annoyed after the match with the performance and result.” It’s a team for whatever reason we always seem to struggle against though the way the opening period had went, I thought we could definitely take something from the game, we lost the goal and I don’t know if it was tiredness or what but we lost our way after that. The 2 goals in the 2nd half, well the least said about that, the better as I don’t want to talk myself into trouble. In truth our performance tonight probably warranted getting nothing out of the game anyway and we’ll be glad to see the back of these early season midweek fixtures. Maybe Pollok’s game on Monday against Uddingston Anvil being postponed in the respect that they had fresher legs than us as the game went on as the Colville Park game would certainly have taken a lot out on the players legs, especially as they battled well in the last 15 minutes to pull 2 goals back in an effort to salvage something from the match.”
Line Up: O’Hara, Montgomery, Burnside (S Murdoch), McCluskey, Ansell, Littlejohn, Miller, Patrick (Mackie), Wilson, McQuade.
